so we finally got our 2023 Atlas but now im freaking out because we have a huge family trip to the mountains in like two weeks and zero storage space. i looked at the thule wingbar evo since everyone says they are the gold standard but then i read a bunch of forum posts saying they make this awful whistling sound specifically with the atlas sunroof setup and now im second guessing everything. i also saw the yakima jetstream but some people say the fit kit is weird for the flush rails on the newer models and i just dont want to waste 600 bucks on something that doesnt fit right or drives me crazy on the highway. what are you guys actually using that stays quiet?

Just a quick one since I went through this mess last summer. I saved some cash going for stuff that isnt as flashy as Thule but honestly works great.

Unfortunately, the big name brands aren't as good as expected lately. I had issues with whistling on my old car and didn't want a repeat. I spent forever on eTrailer looking for something reliable but cheap. Ended up with the Malone AirFlow2 Universal Roof Rack 58 inch. It's quiet and feels very secure. TL;DR: Check eTrailer's reviews. Malone is a solid budget pick that won't whistle.

Congrats on the new ride. I've messed with a few setups on the Atlas and that whistling noise people complain about is usually just an installation error tbh. Most folks leave a tiny gap in the rubber strip on the Thule WingBar Evo 135 cm Aluminum and that creates a flute effect at 60mph. If you seal it tight, it is basically dead quiet. I actually prefer the Yakima JetStream 60 Black Crossbars because the teardrop shape handles crosswinds a bit better on the highway. Here is what you need to know for a clean setup:

  • Use the Yakima SightLine Towers for those flush rails; the fit is rock solid once you torque them down.
  • Position the front bar just slightly behind the sunroof opening to minimize buffeting.
  • Double check that the rubber T-slot inserts are fully seated along the entire length. The Yakima kit might look a bit complex in the box but it contours to the Atlas roofline perfectly. You wont regret it on those long mountain climbs. Feel free to reach out if you get stuck during the install.

Had a sec to think about this more. Spent way too much time looking at torque specs and load ratings before our last trip. Honestly, I went with Yakima Crossbars and it works well for us. No complaints regarding safety.

  • Go with Yakima for the Atlas
  • Their mounting hardware is top tier Its just a very reliable setup that feels secure at high speeds. Really satisfied with the stability.
