so i just bought a cadillac lyriq and im picking it up this weekend here in ohio but honestly im panicking a bit because i have never owned an electric car before. the dealer was explaining things but i didnt really get it and now im worried. i spent a lot on the car so my budget for extras is only about $500 right now.

do i need to buy a special box for my garage or does it come with everything? i keep seeing people talk about adapters for certain stations and different cables and i have no idea where to start. what are the absolute must-have charging accessories i need so i dont get stranded?...

I felt that same panic when I first got my LYRIQ. Honestly though, you can keep it simple and stay well under that $500 budget. Being satisfied with a rugged setup is better than overspending on dealer extras.

Like someone mentioned, you can get by with the standard cord for a bit, but honestly, I was pretty disappointed with the real-world performance of the basic 120v setup. It is painfully slow for a car with a battery as big as the Lyriq. You basically wont gain any range if you are driving more than 30 miles a day. If you are looking at spending your $500 on a dedicated home station, I would steer clear of the JuiceBox 40 Smart EV Charging Station. I had one and the recent software updates were just a mess... it became super unreliable and it is definitely not as good as expected for the price. I ended up returning mine after it failed to start a charge three nights in a row. Instead, I would go with the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp. I switched to this after my JuiceBox headaches and it has been night and day. It is cheaper, the app actually works, and it fits right in your budget while giving you much faster speeds than the stock cord. Unfortunately, you might also find your garage layout is a pain. Dont make the mistake of buying a cheap generic extension cord. I tried a bargain one and it almost melted my outlet because it couldnt handle the heat. If you need extra reach, something like the Lectron NEMA 14-50 Extension Cord 20ft is much safer.

  • Emporia: Reliable, best bang for your buck under $500.
  • JuiceBox: Disappointing app and connectivity issues lately.
  • Lectron Cord: Only buy if you absolutely cannot reach the car port.

Honestly, congrats on the new ride! I was in your shoes a year ago and the Lyriq is such a dream once you get the hang of it. If you are planning on using the mobile cord that comes with the car, my biggest advice is to focus on the outlet itself. Most people just grab a cheap one from a hardware store, but for an EV pulling max power for hours, you want something industrial grade so it doesnt overheat. It gives me so much peace of mind for safety reasons. I am super satisfied with these specific bits:

chill out a bit, you're gonna love the ride. honestly the lyriq is a solid choice and i have been very satisfied with mine. you likely already have the GM Ultium Dual Level Charge Cord 120V/240V coming with the car. i use it every night and it works well for my daily commute without any issues. since you have a $500 limit, dont go buying a fancy wall station yet. instead, grab a Lectron Tesla to J1772 Adapter 48A 250V for about $150. it lets you use tesla destination chargers at hotels which is a lifesaver. use the rest of your cash to get a 240v NEMA 14-50 outlet installed in your garage if you dont have one. thats basically all you need to start out without getting stranded...
