What are the absolute must-have off-road accessories for a new Canyon AT4X? I just picked mine up last week here in Colorado and I'm planning to hit some trails near Silverton next month so I gotta get it ready. I saw some guys online saying the factory rock sliders are fine but then others swear you need aftermarket ones because the stock ones supposedly bend too easy. I'm also looking at bed racks for a tent later but there's so many options it's making my head spin. I've got about $2500 to play with for now but I dont want to waste money on stuff that's just for looks... what should I buy first?
Congrats on the new rig! Unfortunately, those factory rock sliders are pretty much just for show and definitely not as good as expected. I had issues with mine bending the very first time I actually leaned on a rock, which was super frustrating given how much these trucks cost. Since youre heading to Silverton, you really need something that can handle a hit. I would prioritize getting some White Knuckle Off Road Rock Sliders GMC Canyon DOM Tubing over a bed rack any day. They actually bolt to the frame and protect the body. Also, honestly, airing down is the best thing you can do for traction but the factory setup makes it a chore. I ended up getting the ARB Twin On-Board Compressor 12V High Performance and mounting it under the hood. It makes life way easier when you're trying to get back on the pavement. Focus on the protection and air first, or you're gonna regret it.

Tbh you gotta be careful with how much weight you're putting over the bed if you're hitting those high Colorado passes. I learned that the hard way on my first trip out to Silverton... basically had way too much weight up high and the truck felt super tippy on the switchbacks. If you're serious about a rack, I'd suggest looking at the Leitner Designs Active Cargo System Classic because it's actually engineered for the weight instead of just being some cheap steel tubes. Since you're going to Silverton next month, make sure you don't skip on recovery gear. I've seen so many rigs get stuck on the passes because they lacked basic traction. I wouldn't go anywhere without some ARB TRED Pro Recovery Boards Grey/Orange. They're pricey but they wont snap like the cheap knockoffs when you actually need them. Just my two cents... prioritize the stuff that keeps you moving before the fancy tent.
Quick reply while I have a sec... you really gotta think about the belly of that truck if youre hitting Silverton. The AT4X has some okay factory protection but it doesnt cover the vital bits well enough for those jagged rocks. I would suggest looking into some real armor before you smash a crossmember or worse. Im super happy with my Warn VR EVO 10-S Winch with Synthetic Rope. It works well and gives serious peace of mind when solo. Anyway, also grab a Garmin inReach Mini 2 Satellite Communicator because cell service is basically nonexistent out there. Safety gear is never a waste.
