Hey everyone! I recently joined the club and picked up a Civic Type R, and while the stock performance is incredible, I’m looking to take it to the next level. I plan on doing a few track days this summer, so I’m particularly interested in mods that improve cooling and handling. I’ve heard that heat soak can be an issue, so I’m considering an upgraded intercooler or maybe a more breathable intake. I want to keep it somewhat daily-driver friendly, so I'm hesitant to go too stiff on the suspension just yet. For those of you who have already started modding, what would you say are the first three 'must-have' performance upgrades to really sharpen the car's response?
Totally agree with the above! Honestly, in my experience over the years, many guys forget safety... my first track day was scary cuz I boiled the stock fluid! If ur on a budget, prioritize these:
* Castrol SRF Racing Brake Fluid (~$60)
* Ferodo DS2500 Front Brake Pads (~$200)
* PRL Motorsports Billet Intercooler (~$600)
Safety first—it’s way cheaper than a crash! 👍
Honestly, if you are hitting the track, the cooling issues are real. I remember my first session at Sebring... three laps in and i was already seeing limp mode warnings on the dash because the heat was just too much. It is super frustrating when you are just starting to find your rhythm and the car pulls power. For reliability, i swear by the Koyorad Aluminum Racing Radiator because it adds that extra thermal capacity you need for 20-minute sessions. It fits like stock too which makes the install way less of a headache. Another thing that really saved my engine was the HKS Oil Cooler Kit for Civic Type R. People obsess over coolant temps but the oil gets cooked way faster in these turbo K20s. Keeping those oil temps stable is basically cheap insurance for your internals if you plan on doing this often. Since you want to keep it daily-friendly, dont go too crazy on the rubber yet. I eventually swapped to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and they handle the track heat way better than the stock Continentals without ruining the ride quality on my commute. Just my two cents from being stuck in those pits way too many times waiting for things to cool down lol.
yo, congrats on the CTR!! honestly if ur watching the budget, in my experience basically any intercooler from Mishimoto or PRL will do the trick for heat soak. tbh, check out the CivicX forums... there's sooo much technical data there. plus, grab some lowering springs from Eibach and a sway bar from Whiteline. pro tip: use an OBD2 reader to monitor intake air temps!!
This^ Saw this earlier and gotta agree. My cooling setup saved my track day last July. Prioritize cooling, fluid, and tires so ur car doesnt pull timing lol
